Though we always recommend fiberglass pools to our customers looking for a new inground pool, some opt for a vinyl-lined pool. For those who have had a liner pool for years, it’s not unreasonable to need to replace that vinyl liner a few times in the pool’s lifetime, not to mention repairing tears in between. To replace your vinyl liner every 10 to 25 years, you are looking at an average cost of $3,500.

While cost is a major factor in your liner replacements, there are other factors that you need to consider.

Liner Replacement Factors

We often think of inground pools being the only ones with vinyl liners, but actually your above-ground pool’s liner also likely needs repair and replacement.

When it comes to the cost of the above-ground pool liner, the cost tends to be lower than that of an inground pool. Typically, the cost may range from $100 to $600 for the liner itself. However, that’s the baseline cost–that number increases based on factors like the size of the pool and thickness.

Material: Size, Thickness, and Pattern – Liner Replacements

We think vinyl liners are just that–vinyl. But there are a variety of factors which make that material go up in price. For example, a simple, 12’ round liner may only be $100, but triple that size and make it oval, and you’ll be looking at a much greater cost.

Size increasing the cost makes sense. But the vinyl’s thickness will also cause an increase. The standard above-ground pool vinyl liner is 20 mil (20 thousandths of an inch) thick while an in-ground pool liner is 28 mil thick. However, the more durable a liner you are looking for, the higher the cost.

In addition, the pattern you chose will also raise the price. Typically, a basic blue vinyl liner will be your most cost-effective option. However, if you are looking for a pattern or design, you will also see an increase in price.

Product and Installation of Liner Replacements

So, the type of liner will cause the price to fluctuate accordingly. But did you know that the product used to install and hold the liner also will play a factor?

Above-ground pool liners utilize overlap, j-hook, or unibead mechanisms to seal the edge of the liner. While overlap is your most cost-effective option, it is not as long-lasting as some other methods–but the choice is up to you!

Now consider your in-ground options. The cost naturally increases, but why? Along with the above factors, more often than not, in-ground pools are made in custom shapes and sizes which can drastically increase the price. All of those add-ons you wanted, such as steel covered steps and bench seats, can make installation a bit tricky, adding more cost to you.
